Chou Yun Ting

May 9, 2016

Chou Yun Ting is a fashion designer based in Taiwan, who graduated from Shih Chien University. She has an affinity for exploring color and material. Her graduate collection was featured in London's Graduate Fashion Week International Show Awards and the Fashion Scott exhibition. She has also recently been invited to attend the Dutch Design Week.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. My graduation collection is inspired by Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir’s feminist text, The Second Sex, which talks about how society molded the female. I work to translate those ideologies into fashion, especially through exploration of texture.

Top 3 favorite or most visited websites and why? I often go to Pinterest when I have a concept and need visual inspiration. Instagram is great for bridging ideas from painters, architects, and graphic designers whom I avidly follow. Fuckingyoung is also a great source for new and young rebel styles and colors.

If you were a drink what drink would you be? I would be Coke because Coke has that vivid, young, rebellious vibe to its design.

What designers are you interested in right now? Raf Simons! My super idol!

Tell us about your work process and how it develops. Reading books and familiarizing myself with the details of the motifs and ideologies in the text greatly aids my thought process behind the concepts of my work. Following this, I construct a mood board of images and then experiment with various materials.

What kinds of things are influencing your work right now? I believe we influence each other by affecting the perception of each other’s feelings. I try very much to connect all these interactive relationships within my work.

What are some recent, upcoming or current projects you are working on? I am currently working on some installation art and paintings. I am still working with feminist philosophy in The Second Sex in these iterations as well. I think it’s important to explore different techniques and mediums to express an idea.

What do you want a viewer to walk away with after experiencing your work? The core of my work is the social theory around the treatment of women. I would like to direct the viewer’s attention to shift into the perspective of a woman, perhaps to have them feel as if they were a little girl.

What’s your absolute favorite place in the world to be? As I am a Taiwanese, my favorite place is Tainan, Taiwan because it is rich with Taiwanese culture.

What were you like in high school? When I was in high school I fancied myself a rebel. My expressions towards love were bold and traitorous, emotions I still seek to translate into my work.
