Lickstudio

October 25, 2017

Lickstudio was founded in 2016 by Juliana NG and Laurensia Salim in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a womenswear clothing line that combines free spirit, rebellion, and romanticism. Both of the designers believe differences create a balance and allure in a collection. Believing in the fluidity in design, Lickstudio attempts to take different concepts and attitudes and develop them into collections through their aesthetic interpretation.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. I am Lauren, a fashion designer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. I have a year-old womenswear label that I founded with my business partner Juliana, called Lickstudio. I originally come from Lampung, Indonesia and Juliana is from Medan, Indonesia. We founded Lickstudio a year after graduating from Raffles Design Institute in Singapore.

What kinds of things are influencing your work right now? I like to watch movies to get inspired. Having a home office made me hardly go out. Movies make me feel that I can travel to other places or eras.

What are some recent, upcoming or current projects you are working on? We just finished our Spring/Summer 2018 collection, Timeless Dream. We will have a fashion show this October in Jakarta Fashion Week too.

What designers are you interested in right now? I like BarraganDaisyOttolingerAkiko Aoki and GVGV. I like many designers and labels.

What past trends in fashion should never come back? I currently don’t think cone bra is appealing, but my opinion might change in the future.

How long have you lived in Jakarta and what brought you there? I’ve been living in Jakarta for 1.5 years. Me and Juliana moved to Jakarta because we wanted to start our label. We both come from smaller towns in Indonesia and we think that it would be easier to start a fashion label in a big city in Indonesia, as most of the people who work in creative fields are there. It is better also because there are modeling agencies, photographers, and fabric vendors that make the process to make our collection smoother.

How has Instagram changed the industry for you? We think that marketing nowadays is mostly done by posting on Instagram. We just started our brand in July 2016, which was already a time that Instagram marketing was big so we can’t really compare and see a lot of changes.

What’s your absolute favorite place in the city/the world to be? I love quiet places like my bedroom, or this private island in my hometown. It is a small island with really clear water. Because it is a small island, they have limited space for the people who want to stay. I love to sit at the port and feed the fishes.

What do you collect? When I travel, I like to stop at drugstores and to see the soaps they sell. I have a soap collection and I can never get enough of it!

Can you share one of the best or worst reactions you have gotten as a result of your work? The best would be the first time when we got contacted from a buyer who wanted to buy our collection during our first season. We even thought it was a scam, as we never expected there would be people who would buy our collection in bulk. The worst reaction was a person who told us the clothes are not wearable.

If you had to explain your work or brand to a stranger, what would you say? I am a designer, and make women ready-to-wear clothes.
