Revisiting memory is like standing before a bookcase containing stories amassed over time, sitting on shelves grouped together by their similarities.
Some shelves are home to our favorite stories. They’ve been the most formative, teaching us what it is that we want out of our next read.
But, not every book is kept within such close reach. Some are kept towards the periphery by choice. They were difficult, frustrating reads that kept us up at night. They linger beneath the surface like splinters in the gums, whispers through cracks in the drywall.
In a house where the wallpaper peels like scabs, a boy stitches his shadow to the floor with needles and prayers. His mother speaks to the unplugged TV in tongues asking God to fix her teeth. Strip mall altars hum with static. Tweakers race shopping carts down dead-end streets. VHS tapes stutter and skip, imitating your father learning how to cry.
But, still, we hold onto these stories. They may linger uncomfortably with us, but they too were formative in teaching us what it is we seek.
LVL3 is excited to announce the opening of Between Bedlam, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Zoe Metra (Paris, FR/Athens, GR) and Maxwell Volkman (Chicago, IL). Between Bedlam will be on view from 10.11.25 – 11.30.25.
