MAMUT is from Montevideo, Uruguay. The brand works hand and hand with leather workshops in the region, which is famous for its livestock farming and tanning. At the end of 2011, they expanded to include a footwear line called foot MAMUT. MAMUT is Agustina Pereira, Alexia Berthelemy and Sabrina Srur.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. MAMUT emerges out of the hunt for creation. We are three friends and partners who met in high school and decided to start as visual producers, gradually expanding into the creative field as a result of new commercial demands and our own personal interests. At the end of 2011, we included foot MAMUT. At present, MAMUT has become a society of people who love creation and fashion.

Top 3 favorite or most visited websites and why? I (Sabrina) love Freunde von Freunden, I see it as a window to look at cities abroad and to meet people who are doing great things. Same thing with The Selby. Also I enjoy a local design blog called mira mama.

How has living in Montevideo affected your work? It gave us the chance to work with leather, given our country is a great producer of this material (a byproduct of cow breeding). On the other hand, a lack of other resources such as more treated and processed leather (embossments, patent leather, etc) and sophisticated buckles made us work hard on each design to make it different and stylish in our own MAMUT way 🙂

What kinds of things are influencing your work right now? We are constantly devouring movies, art, music, and also everyday things that inspire us: our family, our road to work, and what we eat. Everything influences the decisions we take.

What are some recent, upcoming or current projects you are working on? Right now we are working with our SS campaign to be launched in August, and it comes with big surprises!

What past trends in fashion should never come back? We believe in reinvention and we are vintage lovers, so probably everything will come back one way or another. Life is a circle!

How long have you lived in Montevideo and what brought you there? We’ve all lived in Montevideo since birth! We love our city and are excited about the new growth in culture, fashion and all the movement and waves of new offers it produces.

What do you want a viewer to walk away with after experiencing your work? We like to have returning and faithful people around our products. Our goal is for them to experience MAMUT from the tip of their toes to the back of their heads, to immerse into what we call the MAMUT universe: MAMUT is straightforward, eccentric and has no regrets. Our world is filled with colours; it is smooth and simple with no room for barriers. We face the everyday routine in a surprising and ever ludic way, always providing comfort and confidence at every step.

What’s your absolute favorite place in the city/the world to be? The beach!!
