Jessica Sanders lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received an MFA from Ohio State University, 2010 and a BFA from The University of Miami, 2007. Her work has been seen at KANSAS, NY; Neochrome Gallery, Turin, IT; Johannes Vogt Gallery, NY; Berthold Pott, Cologne; Middlemarch, Brussels; Fifi Projects, Sanpedro, Mexico, Galerie Jeanroch Dard, Paris, FR and Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY. Her work has received recent reviews from Modern Painters, Art in America, Artslant and Blouin Artinfo among others.

What are some recent, upcoming or current projects you are working on? I just installed a solo exhibition at KANSAS here in NYC, open until October 25th. It debuted a new series of slip cast ceramic sculptures, as well as new iterations of paintings from the Saturation Series. Also, I’m in a two person exhibition with Marc Devade at Paul Rodgers Gallery, also in NYC, up October 8 – October 22.

What are you listening to right now? Ramones on repeat.

What is your beverage of choice when working in your studio? Oolong tea, coffee, sparkling water

What do you do when you’re not working on art? Cook, walk the dog, read.

If you hadn’t become an artist what do you think you’d be doing? Line cooking, dog walking, and reading

Tell us a joke. You have the keys, right?

What materials do you use in your work and what is your process like? Beeswax, linen, pine, poplar, porcelain, terracotta, wool, fur, hair, salt, plaster. I start with a material and get to know it. Then I extrapolate.

What was the last exhibition you saw that stuck out to you? Ron Nagle at Matthew Marks Gallery. He’s a favorite of mine and it was a treat to see so many works together.

What artists are you interested in right now? Anne Truitt, Julia Rommel, Ron Nagle, Ann Cathrin November Høibo, Michael E Smith, Daniel Turner, Allison Schulnik, Matt Connors, Darren Bader, Richard Aldrich, Michael Krebber, Carissa Rodriguez.

Can you share one of the best reactions you have gotten as a result of your work? When someone has to touch the work, especially while no one’s looking.
